THE SOUTHERN OPEN

      2025 SOUTHERN OPEN (Friday - AUGUST 8th curl, Saturday - August 9th, all other events:  The Southern Open is always a very popular meet that is held at the Jarvisburg Church of Christ.  For fun we keep a list of Southern Open champions (2013-2024) that is at the bottom of this page.  Also, for fun I always have a write up about the 'overall' defending champions.  So, here it is...

    2024 WRITE UP:  

​

    (IMPORTANT):  Last year due to time constraints, the Southern Open was combined with the state meet, SO if you entered the state meet you also competed in the Southern Open, it was a chance for lifters to win two titles for the price of one.  This year the meets were split which is the norm.  

​

   (114):  Last year Carter Kinkaid posted the top total EVER in North Carolina at 114.  Needless to say, Carter EASILY won his first Southern open title in both the bench AND powerlifting.  If Carter returns, I think he will be almost unbeatable!!!

​​

     (123):  The Southern Open was Vanity Martinez's first meet and she ended with two state records as well as the Southern Open title in the bench AND powerlifting.  

​

      (132):  Teen lifter Chaz Friend would become the third lifter in a row to win their first Southern Open title as Chaz would take first in powerlifting and first in the bench.  Winning the curl was world champion Allison Freeman.  

​

    (148):  Old folk's rule.  Ben Zak would take home his third consecutive powerlifting title, his second consecutive bench title and his third consecutive curl title.  Always weird talking about yourself. 

​

      (165):  Cedric Jernigan has been ranked #1 in North Carolina three times in a row.  Cedric had little trouble taking home his first Southern Open power-lifting title and his first bench title.  

​

    (181):  The ALWAYS popular John Permelia made the trip from Virginia and was rewarded with his first Southern Open powerlifting title.  Winning the bench with an insane 430 pound lift was Ilias Burnett.  In Gains We Trust (IGWT) has the top benchers in the world!!!  

​

      (198):  Ricco Terrel would follow up for IGWT with a 440 bench which would win Rico his first Southern open bench title.  Taking home the curl for the first time was Barry Capps who often makes the journey from South Carolina.  Great job guys!!!

​

      (220):  Nick Grady has been ranked #1 in North Carolina three times.  Nick had no trouble adding his first powerlifting title.  Jasper Jones, also of IGWT, would the bench with a 413 which would give Jasper his first Southern Open bench title.  Finally, we had 8x world champion John Cooper on hand.  John would win the Southern Open curl for the 9th time!!!  In case you're curious, no other lifter has won more than five Southern Open titles in ANY event.  

 

      (242):  Roman Martinez missed the cut off for the 220 class (he was close, no he wasn't), and this ended up working out well for Roman.  Roman would end up winning his first Southern Open title in powerlifting AND Roman would win his first powerlifting title in the bench.

      (275):  Steven Kozlowski is a brutally strong lifter from Virginia.  Steven had no trouble taking home first first Southern Open title in both the bench and curl.  

​

     (275+):  No lifter has won more world titles in powerlifting than Daniel Corridean.  You can imagine the results, right?  Dan won his fourth Southern Open powerlifting title AND Dan won his third bench title.   

​

 (WOMEN):  To keep things competitive, the women have individual weight classes for awards, BUT for the write up it's the top three by K formula, so the women have a challenge.  This is the top 3, women by K formula no order

​

      (FULL MEET & BENCH):  The same three ladies placed in the top three for the bench AND full meet.  We had multiple national and world champion, Mackenzie Grace Taylor who would make the list in the full meet for the third time and the bench for the fifth time.  Madison Berry would make the list in powerlifting for the second time and the bench for the third time, and finally we had Tania Pena would make the list for the first time in both the full meet AND the bench.  Great job ladies.

    (CURL):  All three ladies that finished in the top three had one thing in common; this was their second title for ALL three of them.  Your top culers were Allison Freeman, Jennifer Zak AND Madison Berry.  Thumbs up to Madison, the only lifter to place in the top three for all three women's events at the Southern Open.
