THE SOUTHERN OPEN

      2023 SOUTHERN OPEN:  The Southern was held at the Jarvisburg Church of Christ.  Below is the write up and trivia of who has won the most titles and a list of past winers.

    MOST TITLES: Who has posted the top lifts in their weight class the most times at the Southern Open?   Here are your answers.  Minimum 4 titles.

    105 CLASS: Jeremiah Skinner and Gracie Bushee are young, but they have been training and competing for many years.  The hard work paid off as Gracie would place first in the curl, and Jeremiah would take post the top powerlifting total EVER at the Southern Open (105 class) and Jeremiah would take home his second bench title at 105. Jeremiah would also take home the best lifter youth award.

    132 CLASS: Jennifer Zak hasn't competed in several years and was borderline about competing at all.  She decided to compete and it paid off as she took first in the bench, power-lifitng and the curl AND broke four out of a possible five state records. 

     

     148 CLASS: Although not a record breaking performance like his wife, Ben Zak did manage one state record in the curl and he would take home his first Southern Open bench press title, and he would take home his second curl and his second powerlifting Southern Open title.  

 

     165 CLASS: Ethan Binckley has a terrible injury last year which kept him out of sports.  It was great to see hiim back on the platform at the Southern Open.  How did Ethan do?  Ethan would take home  his second Southern Open powerlifting title and his second Southern Open bench title.  Winning the curl was multiple open world champion, Mackenzie Grace Taylor.   

    

      181 CLASS: Dalton Fazio is a growing boy as he's getting taller and packing on muscle.  Three months ago, Dalton was a 148, now he's 181!!!  How did the new weight class treat him?  Fantastic.  Dalton would win his first Southern Open bench and his first Southern Open powerlifting title.  

​

       198 CLASS: I believe Cameron Druyor trains at home which makes him one of a number of lifters that are self-motivators as it's hard to train without a coach and lifting partner.  This being said, Cameron still took first in all three events: bench, powerlifting and curl.  

​

     220 CLASS: Last year John Cooper missed the Southern Open, but in 2023 he returned with a vengeance as he curled a world record 202 pounds.  To put it in perspective, the previous Southern Open record was 169 pounds.  This was John Cooper's eighth Southern Open title, no other lifter has more than five titles in any event!!!  

     Winning the bench was Kevin Hutchinsin.  Kevin has been diagnosed with cancer and has a battle ahead of him.  Kevin came in from Indiana, YES INDIANA, to set the record at our church before he starts treatment.  A prayer was said for Kevin and we all wish him the best!!!  

​

       242 CLASS: Colton Greene is only 17, but he lifts like an adult.  Colton would total 1,226 which was enough to earn Colton his first bench AND his first powerlifting title. 

​

      275 CLASS: Bernie Rhodes made it two in a row as Bernie would take him his second consecutive bench title.  Thumbs up to Bernie who is 74 years young!!!  We also had George Basnett who would curl a monstrous 173 pounds which was enough to earn George the world record AND the Southern Open title.  

​

      275+: Dan Corridean has been dealing with a number of injury and a bout of Covid so it's been difficult to return to the lifting platform.  FINALLY, Dan made a return trip and it paid off as he would pull a world record deadlift on his way to winning his third consecutive Southern Open title.  Winning the bench was legendary lifter Raymond Classings.  Raymond would win his fourth bench title.
