SONNY AMOS

2023 BATTLE OF THE BORDER

DATE:  April 1st

LOCATION: Currituck High School

BACK GROUND:  Aside from the North Carolina State meet, the Battle of the Border is the longest running RAW meet in North Carolina.  Anyone who has competed at the Battle of the Border knows this...the awards are second to none!!!

WRITE UP:

MEET RECORD:  MOST EVER LIFTED AT THE BATTLE OF THE BORDER REGARDLESS OF AGE GROUP.

105:  At 105 we had a ton of great talent, but it was master legend Karen Poyner who would take a 21 pound lead after the bench.  Three time NC state champion Jeremiah Skinner would pull a 187 deadlift which would cut the lead in half, but it wasn't enough as Karen would take home her first Battle of the Border Title with a meet record 282 total.   Winning the curl was two time women's state champion, Gracie Bushee.

114:  I don't know how it happened, but all of a sudden tiny little Sofia Corridean is no longer so ton and she's starting to hit big numbers.  At the Battle of the Border Sofia would take home her first Border title.  The curl was very close, but in the end Avaya Berge would take the win.  This was Avaya's first Border title as well.  Sofia and Avaya are both very talented, hopefully we see both competing for a state title this year.

123:  I don't remember seeing Jacob Smith compete before, but 'if' this was Jacob's first meet he started with quite a splash as he would win the 123 Border Title.

132:  You know this class is loaded when 4x Border champion, as well as state, national and world champion John "Buck" Ammons ends the day in third!!!  Winning the class with a meet record 606 pound total was Nicholas Silvio. Nicholas broke the record by 126 pounds!!!  Nicholas would then curl a meet record 116 pounds which would break the previous record by 15 pounds.  Very impressive day for Nicholas.

148:  I don't remember seeing the name Jaquan Johnson before, but I don't think he will be forgotten.  Jaquan would pull a 408 pound deadlift on his way to securing his first Border title.  Winning the curl for the second consecutive year and curling a meet record 125 pounds (second year in a row breaking the meet record) was the infamous Gary Teeter representing Pennsylvania.

165:  The 165 class had a great battle.  Easten Binckley would take an 11 pound lead in the bench, but Joshua Bachtel would pull 408 pounds to take first.  Ethan Binckley would curl an insane meet record 161 pounds to crush the meet record and earn his second consecutive Border title.

181:  Virginia had gone a few weight classes without a champion, but that changed when David Lamison totaled 770 pounds and took home his second consecutive Border title.  In the curl Ayden Horton would curl a meet record 149 pounds to squeak out a win over CJ Pearson to capture his first Border title.  The crazy part CJ Pearson's curl would have been the meet record, meaning CJ would have won any year except this year!!!  Rematch 2024???

198:  There were three Binckley brothers competing, but Elijah can take home bragging rights as he was the only one of the three to take home both the push/pull AND the curl title.

220At 220 we saw Colton Green put up a huge 816 push/pull total and I say huge as Colton is only 16 years old!!!

275Barron Capps made it two in a row as he would capture his second border title.  I can tell you from looking at Barron's totals, he is getting very strong, VERY quick, so watch out for him.  In the curl, Carl Elliott would take first place and his first border title.

308:  Injuries are a part of sports, but Daniel Corridean has been trucking through them and it paid off as he took home his third border title.  Daniel would also curl a meet record 160 pounds to win his third curl title.

SHW:  Nobody has ever curled close to 200 pounds at the Battle of the Border.  That changed in 2023 when Joseph Sabol of Pennsylvania curled a meet record 206 pounds which is the most ever curled at the Battle of the Border and easily secured Joseph his first Border title.

BORDER CHAMPION:  Although the Battle of the Border is slightly under the Virginia line, this matchup has always been dominated by North Carolina.  In 2023 North Carolina would win (9-2).
